Years ago when we published our Behind the Diapers article series we focused on makers of cloth diapers…However as the cloth diaper industry grew we saw small makers have become larger manufacturers, thereby allowing more work at home (WAHM) cloth diaper retailers to enter in the marketplace.  Additionally there are cloth diapering mamas who have made careers in other areas. So we decided to open up our scope to include makers and retailer of cloth diapers and more. We want to meet all of these hard working and creative mamas!

We start off by interviewing long time Diaper Pin forum member Selah Roden. She is the creator of Clean Slate Soaps.

Tell us about your children.

We have a socially gifted 5 year old boy (Aidan), a positively accepting 3 year old boy (Isaiah), a joyfully nurturing 19 mth old girl (Elliana), and a surprise in March.  They are our blessings.  They make me strive for better, as I see them watching and learning from me daily.  I never knew what a gift children were until I had my own.

Tell us something special and unique each child.

Aidan is my thinker.  He is very logical, analytical and can generally be counted on to say something at least once a day to make us smile at him in amazement.  Isaiah is very tenderhearted, loving, and lives by his emotions.  He can easily make people feel better by his many hugs, kisses, and/or smiles.  Elliana is our tiny little sweet, easy going girl.  She is so very happy to just be around us.

I understand that you have an interesting previous career where you met your husband. Can you tell us more about it?

When I was 8, I saw Ringling Brothers’ Circus and fell in love with the trapeze artists.  I stayed after the show to meet them, and decided I wanted to be a trapeze artist too.  I pursued my college degree at Florida State University, mostly because it had a collegiate circus, along with the major I was interested in.  I immediately became involved with the circus there and got invited to attend Callaway Gardens with a select group of performers.  I met my husband through a small Bible study that started that summer and then he became my partner for the next 5 years in the act of Double Trapeze.  Wonderful memories and such fun times!

What did you think you’d be when you grew up?

When I was a child, I wanted to be a gymnast.  As I neared adulthood, I wanted to be a SAHM.

How did Clean Slate Soaps get started? Were you looking to start a business?

It started out of our own desire to have locally available natural products and continued as we realized others wanted it too.

What do you love about your business?

Our whole family can participate, at some level.  And there is such a reward for creating with our own hands.

Tell us about your other hobbies and outside interests?

I am a certified yoga teacher and have been teaching classes since my oldest was 2 months old.  I enjoy creative activities, such as art and sewing.  Our family loves the outdoors and physical activities like adventure races.

What’s your favorite product from another WAHM?

Right now my favorite is a hair doll made by Katie, as it has saved our Elliana from making herself bald.  She would pull her hair out, get a wad in her little fist, and suck that thumb.  Now she loves her “Harriet” and has stopped pulling her own hair.

What are your dreams for the future?

To RV travel for extended time while homeschooling.

What’s something that no one would ever guess about you?

How much I love art!  I didn’t realize how much I liked it until my college graduate years when I started taking basic drawing and graphic design.

Anything else you think would be fun for others to know about you?

I used to raise steers & pigs … now I don’t eat meat besides fish and turkey.  I was scuba diving certified as a young teenager … even though I had claustrophobia-like concerns.  I traveled to Israel, Hungry, Romania, France, London, & Spain before knowing the group I went with … and I don’t like to go to places in my own town by myself.  My hair was never cut until I was 9 years old and then not cut again until a teenager … I have recently (past 5 years) donated to locks of love 2 times.  I love garage sales, organizing things, cleaning out closets, planning activities … and I love surprises!
