This week for Behind the Diapers I had the pleasure to talk to Kim Rosas of Dirty Diaper Laundry. I  met Kim in the initial #clothdiapers Twitter chats in 2008,  shortly before she became a top cloth diaper blogger.  She has been blogging since 2009  – it has been wonderful to see her rapid growth in the cloth diaper industry.  If you haven’t seen her video reviews, be sure to check them out!

Please tell us about your family.

My husband and I met in college and married shortly after we graduated.  Our 5 year anniversary is coming up this month.  We had Fletcher, our first son, in 2008.  He is 3.5 now and the most outgoing, friendly kid ever.  You can often find him dancing in public.  Everett came along in 2010.  He is head strong and completely independent.  He won’t eat without a fork (never has) and loves when people compliment him.

What is the first video review you did? How different is it from the most current ones?

I filmed a demonstration of the Gro Baby All-in-Two, which was a brand new concept when it was introduced.  That diaper is the inspiration behind the entire concept of DDL.  That video is a far cry from my videos today.  I was using a typical consumer camcorder and editing software.  These days I use an HD camcorder, lighting, professional level editing software, and I dub the audio after filming for better sound.  It’s come a long way.

How has your blog evolved from when you first started it?

I’m learning as I go.  The design and the innards are much different from what I started with.  I added a searchable database which has changed the guts of the blog and now I have to mostly hire help when I need structural changes instead of DIYing.

To date how many diaper products have you reviewed? What do you review besides cloth diapers?

I believe I am up to about 140 cloth diaper videos and about 200 diapers that have been reviewed.  I have reviewed a number of things, like baby carriers and other baby products, but I mostly stick with cloth diapers.

What is the most rewarding thing that you’ve experienced since you started blogging?

There are a lot of rewards that come with blogging.  I really love getting emails from readers who tell me how much my blog helped in their decision to use cloth diapers.  I’ve also used my blog to raise money and awareness for Giving Diapers, Giving Hope (a non—profit that sends cloth diapers to low-income families).  I’ve gotten tons of positive feedback from the Flats and Handwashing Challenge also.

What is your favorite diaper?

I really gravitate towards my bumGenius Elemental and my Thirsties Duo All-in-Ones.  Of course I do love my flats too!

What other blogs do you like to read?

I commit blogger crimes!  I hardly ever read other blogs.  It is more a time issue since I spend most of my online time working.  When I am reading I love BabyRabies.com.  There are some amazing blogs out there, I wish I could keep up with them.

What advice would you give to a new blogger?

I recently posted a little about this.  Mostly it would be not to start a blog for money!  Blogging is 90% passion and 10% profit (if that.)  If you plan on making it a professional looking, acting website there is a lot of time that goes into it; more than most people realize.

What are your future plans for Dirty Diaper Laundry?

I’m really looking to make DDL even more of a resource.  I’ll be looking for contributing writers and reviewers since my youngest will be potty training in the coming months.

Tell us about your most embarrassing moment or an unusual story from your life.

I have, on more than one occasion, been out in public with my nursing bra cup down and unsnapped.  This gives me one saggy boob.  On one occasion I had a sheer shirt on and didn’t realize I was “exposed.”  Nursing mother hazard!

Is there anything that your fans don’t know about you that you want to share here?

I’m a pretty open book on DDL and my social media outlets.  I’m just a very nerdy girl with a passion for cloth diapers and technology!

What is your favorite – movie, book or TV show?

I will out myself and say my favorite show is Tosh.0.  (Terrible, right?)

Who, living or dead, would you most like to do lunch with?

Ina May Gaskin!  She is amazing and is changing the way the world views homebirth.
