Mompreneurs never cease to impress me – this week  I am privileged to interview – Melissa – the creator and designer behind the beautiful Lalabye Baby diapers.  Learn about what inspired her to create her own diaper line!

Please tell us about your family.

My name is Melissa and my husband Tony and I have two children.  Our daughter, Leah is 3.5 years old and our son, Tai is 2 years old.  I was born and raised in Costa Rica and came to the states when I was 12 years old.  I still have family in Central America and love going to visit them.  My husband is Vietnamese, born and raised in Pennsylvania.  We met in college and have been together for 11 years and married for 4.5 wonderful years.

What motivated you to start cloth diapering?

I became pregnant shortly after being laid off.  I spent a lot of time on the interwebs and reading everything baby!  One day I came across a post about cloth diapers and became instantly hooked.  I got a notepad out and started reading up on all the different styles: pockets, AIO, AI2 etc.  I was totally overwhelmed but really wanted to cloth diaper.  After lots of research I started ordering diapers in different styles and pocket diapers became my favorite.

What inspired you to start your business?

After trying out so many different brands and realizing that there really wasn’t a true newborn size to toddler size diaper out there, I started playing with the idea of designing my own.  I also wanted moms to know they could cloth diaper without a huge investment upfront.

What is unique about the design of your diapers?

Lalabye Baby diaper is a 2 in 1 system.  You can use it as a pocket diaper with the inserts tucked inside or you can snap the bamboo insert to the diaper and use it as an AI2.

What do you love about your business?

My favorite part about my business is knowing I’m helping moms cloth diaper.  I love meeting new moms and educating them about cloth diapers and how easy they truly are to use!

You teach in your Cloth Diaper 101 classes – what have you learned?

The cloth diaper 101 classes have helped me tremendously in my business.  I’m able to see where people are lacking in knowledge about cloth diapering and adjust my lesson plans.  One of the main things I’ve noticed people need help with is learning how to adjust a one size diaper to fit the size that their baby is currently in.  I have learned to keep my classes very simple so that parents are not overwhelmed and then let them ask any questions they may have.

How do you balance your work with family?

A lot of late nights!  Before launching the website and during the design process of the diaper, I spent hours at night working (still do).  I am a stay at home mom so the kids get my full attention during the day but as soon as they are asleep, I get to work.  Naptimes are no longer down time for me, It’s my time to pack and ship orders so that they can go out in the mail that afternoon and return phone calls and emails.   I try to dedicate the weekends to the family.  If my husband is off from work, than we all spend time together.

What is your advice to parents starting out with cloth diapers?

Cloth diapering is not an all or nothing type of deal.  Some people choose to cloth diaper only part time and that is ok.  Ease into it and start with a couple cloth diaper changes a day and soon enough you’ll realize how easy it is and you’ll want to do it full time!

What is your favorite WAHM product?

A friend of mine started her own cloth diaper business shortly after I did and she has made my son diapers as well as wool soakers and I love the quality of her work.  Check out Z Creationz!

Where would you most like to travel to?

One day I would love to visit Australia but I’ve also been dying to visit my family in Nicaragua.  Currently we are planning a family reunion since most of us haven’t seen each other in almost 20 years.

What is one of your guilty pleasures?

Something sweet at night.  Ever since I had children, there is no greater pleasure than to put them to bed and enjoy a bowl of ice cream or some sort of dessert!
