I had the pleasure of meeting Stacy and John late last year when she was expecting her youngest boy and I am excited to see her again when she hosts the Great Cloth Diaper Change in Charlotte. They are terrific business partners and just a great couple to talk to – I am excited to highlight Stacy and her business Jack Be Natural for you all.

Tell us about your family

John and I have been married for almost 9 years and we have 3 wonderful, though often mischievous, boys!  We currently live and operate JBN out of our home in Charlotte NC.

Tell us something special and unique about your children.

Our oldest, Jacob, is like a grown up in an child’s body sometimes, LOL!  He’s very observant and has a scary good memory and a vocabulary years ahead of his age.  Our middle, Nathan, is just a sweetheart and he’s very caring and sensitive. Where his brother is a bit of a “know it all” Nathan is very warm and sensitive, such a momma’s boy.  Our 2 month old Isaac is still too young to notice anything unique but we’re sure his little personality will really start shining through before long.

It seems you haven’t skipped a beat since your latest baby was born.

What is your secret? How have you adapted? We have actually started to adapt ever since we started our second full year in running JBN.  In our first year we experienced a tremendous amount of growth that was frankly not sustainable with us handling all facets of the business.  We either had to hire people and expand or burn ourselves out each working 80 hours a week.  Instead, we decided to take things slow and only take on what we can handle.  Even with that approach there are long hours every week.  Also, I do have supportive husband who puts in a lot of time on top of the full tine job he has which requires him to travel frequently.  Without him I wouldn’t be able to do it frankly.  We make a great team and have learned to balance work and time with each other and our children.
How is your husband involved with the business (support to you, hand on with books, ordering etc?) – He’s involved with a little bit of everything but he’s primarily handling all the financial/legal mumbo jumbo and inventory management.  Between his full time job and JBN he puts in a lot of hours.  Couldn’t do it without him.

What’s the best part of being your own boss?

Obviously the autonomy and flexibility to decide the direction of your business; however, that same autonomy comes at a price because the decisions you make can often have a negative impact that you have to live with or spend time repairing!  I do like being my own boss though, particularly because I can be a mom without someone standing over me telling me what and how to do something.

What’s your favorite part about your job?

Honestly, the same reason we started this business, and that’s to spread the word on Cloth Diapering and mostly help people learn more about raising their children in the most natural way possible.  I was in Human Resources before quitting my job to be a WAHM and I enjoyed HR because of the interaction with people and the satisfaction I got helping people.  The fact that I enjoy that is the reason we have stuck it out for 3 years.  It’s so cliche, yet true, when people say to do what you enjoy.  If we were in it for the money we would have stopped JBN a long time ago!

What are you future plans for your business?

Not really sure.  Right now my focus has been on our newborn and other 2 boys, basically being a mom and wife.  We would like to grow JBN, hire people and make our living this way but we don’t know what the future holds.  As our 2 oldest boys start school and I have a little more free time during the day we may be able to go forward with these plans.

How are the preparations for the Great Cloth Diaper Change?

They are great!  We’re hosting for the 3rd straight year and this year we have a wonderful new venue in Mt.Holly NC.  We had to move it from Charlotte due to some unexpected circumstances which are unfortunately the result of all the drama and competitiveness of this business where some folks forget what the GCDC is all about, but

I digress.  The event will be at Discover You and we have the support of dozens of sponsors and CD’ing parents who will join us and help break the record for a 3rd year in a row!

Where are we most likely to find you when not on the job?

Since the job is at home, I’m at home quite a bit, particularly this time of year when the weather is not so good.

What’s something that no one would ever guess about you?

There are probably a few things but the fact that I cloth diaper is something that takes people by surprise.  They look at me like I have 2 heads when I proudly say that I cloth diaper.  They seem to think that you have to have a certain “crunchy look” or be a hippy to cloth diaper, it really cracks me up!  This is a stigma that I think is slowly starting to change and I am doing my best to help change it!

What is your favorite musical artist or band?

I don’t have time to listen to much music unless I’m in the car listening to XM but I do enjoy the Dave Matthews Band and also love Christian music.
