The bikini twist is a versatile prefold fold.  It is possibly the simplest fold to master and is very forgiving as the “fold” won’t come undone during the change if you’re dealing with a wiggly baby.  It does have a shortcoming – it is not very good at containing very loose stools (like an EBF baby would have).   Your cover will almost definitely need changing.

I’m using a very soft and squishy organic cotton flannel prefold (size regular) provided by Babee Greens in this tutorial.  The baby is 15 months old and 23 lbs.

Lay the prefold out on your changing area

Lay your baby on the prefold with the back edge about even with her belly button

Grab the bottom of the prefold down by the baby’s feet and flip it over (the twist).  The twist will be roughly in the middle of the diaper as the baby’s bottom will be holding the top half down.

Pull the diaper up between the baby’s legs.

Pin or Snappi the diaper snugly.  If you are using a snappi, try to attach the bottom teeth to the fabric just below the twist as this will help ensure a snugger fit.

If you have any excess length, be sure to fold it down so the top edge of the diaper rests at or below the baby’s belly button.

See the picture below- the extra length in the front was not folded down.  This will make fitting a cover over the diaper difficult.
